who didn't catch the story, u.s. today got ahold of a white house draft proposal on immigration and reported in part, quote, it would allow illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents within eight years. the plan would also provide for more security funding and require business owners to check the immigration status of new hires within four years. in addition, the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants could apply for a newly created lawful prospective immigrant visa under the draft bill being written by the white house. it if approved they could apply for the same professional legal stats for their spouse or children living outside the country according to the draft. in response, florida senator marco rubio issued the following statement. it reads in part. this legislation is half-baked and seriously flawed. it would actually make our immigration problems worse and would further undermine the american people's confidence in washington's ability to enforce our immigration laws and reform our broken immigration system. yesterday republicans were also quick to criticize

the threat posed by guerrillas. the fact that the u.s. army and marine corps and other modern militaries including the french have to deal with the threat today is absolutely unsurprising. but i don't mean to suggest that absolutely nothing has changed over the course of the last 5,000 years. there have, in fact, been some significant changes. the biggest one has to do with the power of public opinion and propaganda. and this was something that was demonstrated in our very own war of independence. now, when we think of the american war of independence, we tend of think of battles like lexington and concord where the yankees slithered on their bellies and shot at the redcoats from behind trees and rocks in ways that the redcoats assumed to be ungentlemanly. now, these were, no doubt, effective tactics. but in the end what's striking to me about studying the american revolution is the extent to which it was decided not so much by what happened on the battlefield, but what actually happened in the house of parliament, in the commons in england. now, when you read conventional accounts, if i

on this behind the scenes and someone decided to give it to "u.s.a. today" and "u.s.a. today" reported on it and now everyone is talking about. the thing here, thomas, is that republicans overall criticism is that the president doesn't lead, the president doesn't lead on the economy, the president doesn't lead on immigration. the president doesn't lead on gun control if you will. when the president does take action, action that he telegraphed verbally saying if congress doesn't do something, i am going to step in and do something, they criticize him for taking the steps to jump into a position to lead on an issue that he cares about that a lot of other people care about. thomas, if the immigration panel in the senate falls flat as we have seen happen many times in congress, come up with gangs and try am to come up with plans and nothing happens. if the immigration gang falls flat, the president would be in a position to step in and say, here, here is the plan, republicans want to say to the president playing politics with this and i think the president is trying to get something done.
